What is a doula?

A doula/birthworker/space-keeper is a trained companion who is not a healthcare professional and who supports another individual through a significant experience (usually health related), such as childbirth, miscarriage, induced abortion or stillbirth, or non-reproductive experiences such as end of life care. A doula may also provide support to the client's partner, family, and friends. The doula's goal, and role, is to help the client feel safe and comfortable, complementing the role of the healthcare professionals who provide the client's medical care.

Research has shown that the presence of a birth doula helps a laboring person’s outcomes in a variety of ways including a reduced  risk of cesarean section, a decreased likelihood of use of any medications during labor, an increased likelihood of a shorter labor, and ultimately increases their chance of having a positive memory of their birth experience. Doulas are valuable in empowering the birthing person and allowing the birthing person to feel connected and secure.

*A doula is NOT a midwife, nurse or doctor and cannot administer medication or other medical treatment or give medical advice.

Motherspace Keeper

What does the term motherspace mean?

“Motherspace” isn’t a formal dictionary term, but it’s used in a few meaningful ways depending on context. Here are the main ones:

Emotional/Psychological meaning

Most commonly, motherspace refers to the mental and emotional state of being a mother — especially the deep focus, protectiveness, and identity shift that comes with caregiving.

It can describe:

  • That hyper-attentive, always-on awareness
  • The emotional bandwidth devoted to a child or loved one
  • The internal shift in priorities after becoming a parent

You may hear it used in conversations about postpartum life, identity changes, or maternal instincts.

Spiritual or Feminine Archetype Context

In spiritual or feminist discussions, “motherspace” can mean:

  • A nurturing, creative, life-giving energy
  • A symbolic “space” of unconditional love and protection
  • A communal emotional space held by women/mothers

It overlaps with ideas like the “divine feminine” or collective maternal energy.

Physical or Community Space

Less commonly, it can refer to:

  • A physical gathering place for mothers
  • A support group or online community for moms
  • A business or program centered around motherhood

It’s a flexible, metaphorical term. The core idea is a space — mental, emotional, spiritual, or physical — centered around motherhood and nurturing.

If you saw it somewhere specific, I would love if you shared the context. The meaning can shift depending on how it’s being used.

What does it mean to be a motherspace keeper?

A “motherspace keeper” is a symbolic phrase.

At its core, it means:

Someone who intentionally holds, protects, and nurtures the emotional, energetic and sometimes physical space around mothers or mothering.
Depending on context, it can mean someone who:

  • Creates emotional safety for mothers to be honest and vulnerable
  • Supports women without judgment during their perinatal period
  • Protects a mother’s mental bandwidth from unnecessary stress
  • Facilitates circles, support groups, or healing spaces
  • Helps preserve the dignity and identity of a mother during transition

Think of it as “holding the container” while a mother does the intense work of caregiving and identity transformation.

A motherspace keeper could be:

  • A doula
  • A therapist
  • A partner who actively shields and supports
  • A community leader
  • Even a friend who shows up consistently and respectfully

It’s about presence and responsibility.

The deeper meaning:

Motherhood is physically and psychologically demanding. A motherspace keeper recognizes that and says:

“You don’t have to hold everything alone. I will help protect the space you’re operating in.”

A full-spectrum doula is a community care worker who offers support to people during the full spectrum of pregnancy – from preconception, to birth, to abortion/miscarriage, to adoption, to postpartum. While some folks may come to this work with medical knowledge and experience,  doulas are not medical professionals. Instead, we work alongside our clients in a variety of medical and medically adjacent settings. more info

The term "perinatal" can be used in a generic or a very specific way. It  means around (peri-) the time of birth (-natal), so it can be used to refer to the entire or parts of the period around conception and through  the first year of life. I will often use this term while referring to both the birth and postpartum period(s).

Other words used interchangeably: postpartum -- postnatal
prenatal -- antepartum/antenatal

Research has shown that having a doula can lead to shorter labor, fewer medical interventions, and a more positive birthing experience overall. We provide emotional and physical support through labor, birth and postpartum phases.

Doulas support all types of births including medicated, cesarean, and VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean); in hospital, birth center or at home. Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for all births.

As of now, we offer full spectrum doula support (birth, postpartum and pregnancy loss), sleep consulting and massage therapy. Please visit our contact page if you are interested in knowing how we can support you and your family.
